Steel or cast iron guide roll for continuous casting plant - is nitrided, pref. by glow discharge, to increase its working life

Guide and support roll for continuous casting plant is made of steel and is nitrided on its surface, pref. by glow discharge. The roll is pref. made of (a) unalloyed carbon steel or (b) cast iron. The roll has a more than double working life. The roll surface can be nitrided via a gas, powder or bath. The rolls are esp. 150-250 mm dia. because such rolls can be effectively cooled.
