Translucent white acrylonitrile!-methyl methacrylate! copolymers - prepd. in the presence of coumarone-indene resins, have good optical and mechanical properties

Translucent white and coloured plastics are based on acrylonitrile copolymers made with the addn. of a coumarone-indene resin (I) to the monomer mixt. Pref. copolymers are of acrylonitrile (II) and methyl methacrylate (III), opt. together with acrylic esters, styrene and/or vinyltoluene. Pref. copolymers contain (by wt.) 50-90% (II), 50-10% (III) and 0.2-2% (I). The prods. have good optical and mechanical properties, esp. toughness, coupled with good heat resistance. They are esp. useful as organic glass as a replacement for silicate glass e.g. for safety purposes.
