<p>Protective screens for protection against radioactive rays, esp. gamma rays, are made from a hardened mixt. of a pulverised or powdered lead cpd. and a synthetic resin. The screens can also be made by sintering a mixt. of the powdered lead cpd. and alkaline earth or mineral cpds., esp. alumina, to form construction elements which may opt. be coated with a synthetic resin layers, e.g. of polyethylene, for the absorption of fast neutrons. The compsns. are useful for the mfr. of bricks, building elements, pipes, containers for radioactive waste, protective screens and panels e.g. for installation in nuclear reactor stations, submarines, etc. The materials are lighter and easier to install than lead screens, and give good protection against radiation.</p> |
