The linear stepping motor controls the positioning of slides in numerically controlled machine tools, and offers a high precision feed using parts made without rigorous demands on their accuracy. This is achieved with springs (2) which are clamped at one end in the recesses (3) of the housing (1) and carry a friction pad (7) at their free end. The excitation of solenoids 4/5 or the application of other forcing drives, such as magnetostrictive units, fluidics etc. causes a shift of the springs acting as a parallelogram with the pad (7) thrust against the guide track (8). Incremental feeds of less than 1 um can be attained, and the adherence against the track can be enhanced with magnets.
