Reinforced metal composites, or whiskers for such composites, are made using metal particles (I) with length: dia. ratio >2:1. (I) are heated, opt. together with other constituents of the composite, and exposed to others media, e.g. gases so (I) undergo a transformation, e.g. hardening. (I) pref. consists of small needles; and the transformation or hardening may be restricted to a surface zone, so a softer, tougher core remains in the composite. The transformation may occur with crystal growth in the longitudinal direction, e.g. in the direction of mechanical working of a wire produced from the composite. The transformation can be undertaken on a partly pressed metal powder so the initial pressing does not involve the use of transformed, i.e. hard materials. Magnetic forces can be used to align ferromagnetic particles (I).
|
