The protective circuit, for a switched power transistor, has the transistor's collector/emitter path shunted by a capacitor in series with a rectifier. The rectifier is either a thyristor (12, 13) which may be turned off or a transistor. The capacitor (10) is connected in series with a resistor (14) which is in series with a decoupling diode (16). Thus the diode and resistor shunt the thyristor. The diode's conduction direction is opposite that of the transistor (4) being protected. A choke is connected in series with the transistor's collector.
