The pan mill driving gearbox has the gear housing and the mill column forming a single unit. It comprises only a single bevel gear train and a single epicyclic gear train, completely housed inside the cylindrical housing. The bevel gear pinion shaft runs in bearings in the supporting housing wall. The epicyclic sun wheel can be unsupported in the radial direction and driven by a double gear type coupling. A rounded thrust bearing supports the weight of the sun wheel without relative rotation. There can be a further double gear coupling between the planet carrier, also unsupported in the radial direction, and the hollow mill shaft.
