<p>Ethylene-CO copolymers are prepd. by reacting the monomers in the presence of a peroxydicarbonate catalyst. The copolymers have potential value as engineering plastics. Copolymers having high m. pts. and CO content and obtd. in good yields at relatively low temps. and moderate press. The catalyst is pref. di-(2-ethylhexyl), dicyclohexyl or dicetyl peroxydicarbonate and the amt. required is usually 0.005-5.0, pref. 0.1-2.0, wt. %, based on the total monomers. The wt. ratio of ethylene to CO is desirably 1:4-4:1. A cocatalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or 2,2'azobis-(isobutyronitrile) and other copolymerisable ethylenically unsatd. monomers such as isobutylene, cyclohexene, styrene, methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate or isoprene may be present in the reaction mixt. Reaction is suitably a 20-100 degrees C/300-2000 psig. opt. in presence of solvent.</p> |
