1319473 Fluoroalkanols FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 2 Sept 1970 [2 Sept 1969] 42005/70 Heading C2C Compounds of formula C n F n2+1 CH 2 OH, wherein n is 3 or more, are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of a compound of formula C n F 2n+1 COOR, wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, using ruthenium as catalyst, in the presence of 4 to 1000 % wt. of water, based on the acid or ester, at elevated temperature and pressure. Specified products are 1,1-dihydro-perfluorobutanol, -octanol, -nonanol and -decanol. Specified catalysts are ruthenium supported on carbon, alumina or silica gel. The process may be batchwise or continuous and is preferably effected in the presence of a mineral acid, e.g. a hydrohalic acid, sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid. |
