1529197 Controlling light THOMSON CSF 20 Nov 1975 [21 Nov 1974] 47876/75 Heading G2F [Also in Division G5] Selected points of a layer of molecularly aligned optically transparent (nematic) mesophase having a direct transition to the transparent isotopic liquid phase are temporarily heated so as to undergo such a transition and are thereafter allowed to cool to the aligned mesophase during which process optically scattering cybotactic groups appear momentarily. Silane coatings on electrodes either side of the layer determine the nematic alignment and recovery thereof after cooling is expedited by applying an A.C. voltage (a few KHz) to the electrode. Selective heating may be via a scanning modulated optical beam absorbed by the mesophase layer (impurities may be incorporated for this purpose) or by the electrode (indium and/or tin oxide); alternatively one electrode may comprise mutually insulated X and Y conductor strips connected at each intersection by resistive heating elements, for row by row addressing of points. By connecting voltage across the ends of the same electrode non-selective heating of the layer to maintain the mesophase may be accomplished. Reproduction of television pictures is referred to.
