1426140 Cooling nuclear reactors SIEMENS AG 29 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 14147/74 Heading G6C In a liquid-cooled nuclear reactor installation, emergency cooling means are provided to form a spray curtain, within the pressure vessel, in a space above the reactor core. In one embodiment (Figs. 2-4, not shown), a primary coolant (hot) conduit (3) is joined by an emergency coolant supply conduit (9) a curved deflector hood (22) being provided at the junction. The latter directs emergency coolant along the hot conduit (3) towards the reactor pressure vessel but does not substantially impede the normal flow, in the opposite direction, of primary coolant. In the pressure vessel, the jet of emergency coolant is atomized by framework structures (13) in the space (12) above the core. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), a separate conduit (30) for supplying emergency coolant enters the pressure vessel and terminates in a nozzle (14) from which a jet is sprayed on to framework structures (13) and angled baffle plates (31) arranged in the space (12) above the core. In other embodiments (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), conduits (15) for emergency coolant supply are secured to the pressure vessel cover (32) and the coolant has to pass through a core cover plate (16). Various arrangements ensure the formation of a spray curtain during or afterpassage of coolant through the cover plate. |
