The silencer comprises a housing (1), with pipes to the inlet chamber (5), and an outlet connection (3). The inlet chamber (5) is connected by way of a pipe (7) to the buffer chamber (6) with impinging flow. A second buffer chamber (10) with impinging flow is joined to this. The second buffer chamber is connected by way of a shorter pipe (11) to the inlet chamber. Both pipes (7, 11) have perforations (8 and 12) in the area of a resonance chamber (14). The resonance chamber (14) is separated from the space with the outlet connection by a perforated wall (15). The band width of the attenuated sound frequencies is extended by means of the silencer. The silencer is especially suitable for commercial vehicles. <IMAGE>
