In a new process for the prodn. of pyrimidine derivs. of formula (I) a cpd. of formula (II) H2N-CO-CHR2-C(=NH)-R3 is reacted with an acid halide of formula (III) ROCl in the presence of an acid acceptor or with an acid anhydride of formula (IV). Reaction of (II) with (R'1CO)2O (IV) gives (I; R' is not = NR4R5). In the formulae, R1 is 1-5C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl, opt. substd. phenyl, or -NR4R5; R'1 is R1 other than NR4R5; R2 is H or 1-5C alkyl; R3 is OR6 or -NR7R8; R4,R5,R7,R8 are 2-5C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl, or opt. substd. phenyl, or NR4R5 and/or NR7R8 is/are heterocyclyl opt. contg. a further N- or O-atom; and R6 = 1-6C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl or opt. substd. phenyl.(I) are useful as pesticide intermediates, esp. (thiono) phosphoric acid esters or ester amides. Some cpds. (I) also themselves have fungicidal activity. (I) are obtd. in high purity and very good yields. Specific cpds. (I) include 2-ethyl-4-ethoxy-6-hydroxypyrimidine.
