In the prodn. of new tetrahydrobenz(g)isoquinoline derivs. of formula (I) and their acid addn. salts, the residue R2 in a cpd. of formula (II) is removed by solvolysis and the product is opt. converted into an acid addn. salt: where R1 is H, F, Cl, BR or 1-4c alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy; R2 is solvolytically removable residue (e.g. alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, alkanoyl or aroyl); R3 is H, 1-4C alkyl, or 7-10C phenylalkyl in which the phenyl ring is opt. monosubstd. by F, Cl, Br, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy; and R4 is H; o r NR3R4 is 1-pyrrolyl.(I) have antiaggressive activity and can be used e.g. for treating aggressive states, e.g. in psychopaths. They also have central sedative activity and can e.g. be used in pychatry for the treatment of agitation. specific cpds. (I) include 5-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenz(g)isoquinoline.
