In a prcess for the prepn. of new derivs. of formula (I) and their 1-oxides and salts, a 3-cephem-3-ol of formula (II) or 1-oxide thereof is reacted with an ester of the alcohol R3-OH with sulphuric acid, halo-sulphuric acid or a halo-substd. lower alkanesulphonic acid. In the formula where R1A is amino protecting gp.; R1B is H or an acyl gp.AC; or R1A+R1B for divalent amino-protecting gp.; -COR2A is protected carboxy; R3 is opt. substd. hydrocarbyl. In the prod., carboxy- and/or amino-protecting gps., may be removed to give cpds. (I) in which R2 A ia OH and or R1A is H. (I) are useful as antibacterial agents or intermediates for antibacterials.
