In a new process for the prodn. of pyrimidine cpds. of formula (I) a cpd. of formula (II) is reacted with an amidine of formula (III) in the presence of a strong base. R3-CS-CHR2-CO-OR9 (II); H2N-CR1=NH (III) where R1 is 1-5C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl, opt. substd. phenyl, or -NR4R5; R2 is H or 1-5C alkyl; R3 is OR6 or -NR7R8; R4,R5,R7 and R8 are 1-5C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl, or opt. substd. phenyl, or NR4R5 and/or NR7R8 is/are heterocyclyl opt. contg. a further N- or O-atom; and R6 is 1-6C alkyl, is not >6C cycloalkyl or opt. substd. phenyl.Cpds. (I) are useful as intermediates for pesticides, esp. (thiono)phosphoric acid esters or ester amides. Some cpds. (I) also themselves have fungicidal activity. (I) are obtd. in high purity and very good yields. Specific cpds. (I) include 2-ethyl-4-ethoxy-6-hydroxypyrimidine.
