Phenoxybenzyl esters of formula (I) and their optical isomers are new. In (I), R = F, Cl, CF2H or CF3 and RCF2O is at the meta- or para-posn. R2= ethyl, n- or isopropyl, tert. butyl or isopropenyl. R3 is H or CN. Also new are thephenylalkanoic acids of formula (II). In (II), R1 is R or H. X is S, O, SO or SO2. R12 is R2 other than isopropenyl. (I) are useful for control of insects and mites in plant protection and veterinary medicine. They have a systemic effect and, unlike the pyrethrins, good residual activity. They are esp. used to control Heliothis virescens and mosquitoes. (II; X = O) are intermediates; no use is given for other (II).
