Electric resistance welding of door hinge - using concave underside and inset ribs on pivot portion to fuse to hinge plate without flash

The door hinge is designed for production by the electric resistance welding process and comprises a pivot portion (3) in the form of an extrusion having a basic cylindrical shape. The underside (4) of this extrusion is concave (7) parallel to the longitudinal axis of the part and is bounded on each side by a rib (5). Each rib is set in from the adjacent outer edge and provides the electrical contact when pressure is applied between the pivot portion and the hinge plate (1, 2). The dimensions and insetting of the ribs is calculated so that a neat joint line with no flash is produced.
