<p>Motor vehicle safety steering wheel is provided within the rim with an impact plate of the energy absorbent type and composed of at least three layers. First layer remote from the driver includes a steel support plate reinforced by deformed ribs, second intermediate layer is composed of friable foamed material and the third layer facing the driver is formed by a plastics cover plate. Pref. the wheel rim and the spokes, which are elastically resilient, and the impact plate are covered with an elastically resilient foamed polyurethane. Intermediate layer may be formed of a synthetic foamed plastics material filled with glass fibres or ceramic material. Cover plate may consist of a thermplastics plate provided on the side facing away from the drive with reinforcing ribs and also with hooter actuating members. Large impact face of the plate prevents the steering column from piercing the thorax.</p> |
