A number of sheet grippers is fixed on two gripper support elements extending parallel to the leading edge of the sheet over the width of the printing machine, of which gripper support elements a gripper support shaft bears the gripper fingers and a gripper rest rail (19, 21) bears the gripper rests for the gripper fingers and is capable of slightly deforming the printing sheet (77) at its leading edge by moving at least one of the two gripper support elements in a direction running approximately perpendicular to the plane of the printing sheet. The device is intended to allow satisfactory processing even of very soft types of paper which are flexible perpendicular to the plane of the sheet and in which deformations of the sheet which radiate from the grippers customarily occur, which have a corresponding effect on the printing pattern and can lead to the formation of radiating folds. According to the invention this is achieved in that, at least in the central region of the two gripper support elements, their spacing can be enlarged by a predetermined amount, the sheet grippers can then be moved from the central region by a given distance towards the respective printing machine wheel, and the spacing of the two gripper support elements can finally be reduced again by the predetermined amount. <IMAGE>
