When the high-voltage test generator, which is constructed as a Marx multiplier circuit, is used as a test switching voltage generator only those stages (A1) which are relatively close to earth are used, while the upper stages (A2) can be changed, by switching elements (7, 11) which can be used selectively, into one of three switching states which are inactive for switching-voltage production: a) all the upper generator stages are short-circuited, b) the upper generator stages are charged with a charging voltage of opposite polarity, and c) the upper generator stages are connected together in a combination in accordance with a) and b). In the transition region between the stages (A1) which are relatively close to earth and the upper stages (A2), an additional large-area screening electrode (8) is arranged which is connected upstream of the head screening electrode (9) of the test generator. The purpose of the invention is to improve the utilisation of the test generator in the production of positive aperiodic or oscillating test switching voltages, and makes it possible to improve considerably the ratio of the test switching voltage which can be achieved to the cost for producing and designing the head electrode. <IMAGE>
