The binding device is for automatic bookbinding machines with a cover supply unit and fitted with a binding cover guide table below the movement track of a book block which is conveyed under tension by a tensioning element. The binding device includes an installation for the cover supply unit to change the conveyor chain speed near to the application point to align the binding cover on to the book block and with an installation connected to the cover press unit to adjust the exact point in time at which at least one side plate and the counter plate or both are pressed against the binding cover.
