Patterned decorative structural panel prodn. - by slip casting plaster or cement in mould contg. transfer sheet printed with water-soluble ink

In the prodn. of a decorative structural panel, a patterned, pref. printed layer contg. a binder and a colour, at least one of which is water-soluble, is placed on a substrate surface for the prodn. of a transfer layer. The patterned layer is placed upwards in a slip casting mould, then a mixt. of hydraulic material, water and opt. conventional additives is poured into the mould and hardened. The colour penetrates the surface of the panel and panels of constant quality can be made. The process is simple and cheap and avoids the need to use heating and pressure. Inan example, synthetic fibre paper was printed with a marble colour, using 3 inks contg. polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVA, EtOH, water and pigment. This was placed in the bottom of a mould in which a mixt. of gypsum and water was cast. The hardened panel, which had a rich pattern, was then impregnated with a polymethyl methacrylate prepolymer and hardened, increasing the richness and stability of the pattern.
