A mechanical tape playing machine for use with childrens toys, uses a multi stack tape. The tape is (34) mounted on a spring loaded spool (50) within an enclosed casing. The casing has a perforated front plate (18, 20) that has a cone-shaped diaphragm (22) to form a simple loudspeaker. - The centre of the diaphragm carries a needle (30) that is excited by the tape moving past under control of the spring. The tape indexes axially to give access to the different tracks.
