The unloader is for an open ended drum (42) of solid high viscosity coating material (22) and consists of a press having an upper movable platen (58). A fixed lower heat exchange member (61) fits into the drum with only slight play. The platen and heat exchange member are relatively movable. The upper face of the heat exchange member melts the lower layer of material in the drum and a conduit (71) collects the melted material as it drains through the heat exchange member. The upper face of the member includes a truncated conical annular area (69) tapering inwardly and downwardly from a sharp peripheral edge. The edge penetrates into the material.
