<p>The novel ethylene copolymers comprise (a) 40-90% ethylene; (b) 2-20% carbon oxide; (c) 5-40% of a monomer copolymerisable with these latter giving flexible polymers, this monomer being selected from unsatd. 3-20C mono- and dicarboxylic acids and their esters, vinyl esters of satd. carboxylic acids where the acid gp. contains 1-18C atoms, vinyl alkyl ethers where the alkyl gp. contains 1-18C atoms, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, 3-20C alpha-olefins, norbornene and vinly aromatic cpds. and (d) 0.2-15% of an ethylenically unsatd. 4-21C monomer contg. an epoxide gp. The copolymers form curable mixts. with efficacious amts. of solid organic heat-curable resins e.g. phenolic, epoxy and melamine/HCHO resins; these mixtures comprise 1-99% (5-95%) esp. 10-50% copolymer and 1-99% (5-95%) esp. 90-50% heat-curable resin. The mixtures may be shaped into sheets, moulding blocks or fibres before curing e.g. by heating. They may also contain fillers, e.g. silica, glass fibres, cotton, metals. The curable mixtures are suitable for the manufacture of flexible, rigid or semi-rigid sheet, coatings, fibres, mouldings, cellular products and adhesives.</p> |
