1528520 Axial-flow compressors SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION 15 Dec 1976 [24 Dec 1975] 52344/76 Heading F1C [Also in Division F2] A seal assembly for engaging the rotor 7 of a compressor when stationary to prevent escape of gas from the compressor when the drive shaft 8 and motor casing 10 are removed includes a piston 2 carrying a seal ring 11 and connected to metallic diaphragms 3, 4 operable in conjunction with spring washer 14 to retain the piston in a lower position while the compressor is running to locate the seal ring clear of knife edges 12 on the rotor. When the rotor is stationary and the shaft and casing 10 are to be removed, the space between the diaphragms is pressurized via port 18 to raise the piston and cause the seal ring to engage the rotor. Upon lowering of the shaft and the casing, the rotor moves down to seat on the compressor housing at 19, and a seal ring 17 moves clear of spring washer 16 which then abuts seat 20 and thereafter biases the piston upwards via retainer ring 13 the seal ring will be maintained in engagement with the rotor if the space between the diaphragms is depressurized.
|
