1527922 Transverse-flow fans and pumps NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Jan 1976 [28 Jan 1975] 2284/76 Heading F1C [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for accomplishing simultaneous mass transfer of a fluid and heat exchange between the same fluid and another fluid comprises an impeller which incorporates heat pipes of airfoil-like profile. The apparatus may be a fan blower, Figs 1 and 2, or a rotary pump, Fig. 5. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, heat pipes 22 extend between support plates 24, 26 and through apertures in a solid cylinder 28, Fig. 1, to form an assembly which is rotatable in a housing 14 about an axis 20 by a motor 32. On rotation of the assembly, the heat pipes impel fluids F 1 and F2 and also effect heat exchange therebetween. The fluids are kept separate by the solid cylinder 28 and also by a wall 30 of the housing 14. Each of the heat pipes is of heat conductive material eg copper, has been evacuated, and contains a wick of porous material 34 soaked with a liquid. The porous material may be wire screen, glass fibre, or cloth of natural or synthetic fibre. The liquid soaked into the wick may be water, an alcohol, a fluorohydrocarbon or aqueous ammonia. As shown in Fig. 5, heat pipes 64 each have a wick 34 extending longitudinally of the pipe and a wick 66 at one end. The heat pipes are of airfoil-like profile, have fins 86 and are mounted so as to form an assembly rotatable by a drive pulley 58. Rotation of the assembly pumps a fluid F 1 (such as hot air or water) through a volute chamber 50. A second fluid (eg liquid) passes as indicated at F 2 . Annular seal members 84 contact a hoop 76 forming part of the rotatable assembly. It is mentioned that apparatus according to the invention may be a cooling system of a water-cooled engine. |
