1527805 Rivets OLYMPIC FASTENING SYSTEMS Inc 16 Nov 1976 [17 Nov 1975] 47682/76 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] A blind rivet, having a head 25 (Fig. 5) and hollow stem 31 provided with longitudinal slits, combined with a headed pin 22 which is clenched at 39 to the rivet, is set using apparatus which weakens the pin adjacent the head to cause fracture of the pin at this point following setting of the rivet (Fig. 6). To set the rivet, a clamp 21 (Fig. 8) pulls the pin to upset the rivet and hold together two workpieces 34, 35. At the end of the setting operation, cutting edges 24 on a collet 23 are forced inwardly to weaken the pin. The collet only moves inwardly when the setting force overcomes the bias of a spring 42 and allows the collet to move axially against cam surfaces 26. The spring may be replaced by an equivalent hydraulic arrangement. The pin is fractured adjacent the rivet head irrespective of the thickness of the workpieces. |
