1528428 Separating oxygen from air LINDE AG 11 Feb 1977 [12 Feb 1976] 05812/77 Heading F4P In a process for the production of gaseous oxygen to satisfy a varying demand by the two-stage rectification of air in a doublecolumn rectifier 2, 3, the liquid oxygen accumulating in a sump 28 passes to a reservoir 5 from which it is fed to a secondary condenser 4 to evaporate in heat exchange with condensing nitrogen and the liquid oxygen which does not evaporate returns to the sump via a U-shaped tube 20 which prevents any disturbance in the secondary condenser from affecting the operation of the rectifier. Liquid nitrogen is stored in a tank 6 and is used to maintain the nitrogen content of the residual gas constant. Liquid nitrogen collected in the low pressure column 3 and the secondary condenser is fed back to the collector in the high pressure column.
