The present invention provides a process for producing titanium dioxide by a continuous gaseous oxidation of titanium tetrachloride or titanium tetrachloride containing gas with oxygen or oxygen containing gas, in which both of said gases are separately preheated, the titanium tetrachloride or titanium tetrachloride containing gas is passed downwardly in the reactor from a burner equipped with a cooling jacket disposed in the upper part of the reactor, oxygen or oxygen containing gas is fed downwardly to react with titanium tetrachloride; an inert gas and inert refractory particles are injected from the lower part of the reactor to the inner wall of the reactor so as to pass upwardly as a suspension, the upward flow of the suspension being countercurrently contacted with the downward flow of the reaction product rapidly cooling the reaction product and the inert refractory particles injected upwardly impinge on the inner wall of the reactor to prevent deposition of the product titanium dioxide.
