the devie comprises a chassis (2) suspended at its centre by the cable (3) of a crane. The chassis has a central beam (4) terminating at each end in an enlarged portion (5). The two pairs of outer corners of the enlarged portions are right angles and are dimensioned to fit within the container to be manipulated. At each corner of the chassis there is an articulated arm (6, 7) movable between two positions. At the free ends of the arms there are sliders (8, 9) which can run along the edges (L) of the container until the chassis reaches the required position relative to the container. A cable (10) connects sliders that attach to the same container edge to make initial engagement of the chassis with the container easier.
