A freeze-drying machine consists of a drum (1) which can rotate in bearings installed in supports forming part of a frame. The drum is made of stainless steel with integrally machined internal ribs formed by turning. The probe of a thermo-couple is fitted into an axial hole in the wall of the drum. Liquid nitrogen flows into the drum through one pipe and flows out through another. The machine is intended for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries and the product to be freeze-dried is deposited on the external surface of the drum where it freezes rapidly. The freeze-dried material is them scraped off the surface by a fixed but adjustable blade.
