The machine is used for peeling logs (1) to obtain separate sections for box manufacturer. These are automatically sorted in accordance with predetermined criteria and are accepted or rejected. The sections pass down a channel (13, 17) formed by upper (16) and lower (15) belts, waste being removed by suction (18, 19). The pieces enter another channel (35) between similar belts (31, 32) lower down and are passed between gauging heads (37, 38, 40). These check thickness, length and width, the values passing into a memory unit (6). If accepted, an air blast (52) deflects the section over a slide (46) onto a conveyor (7a). If rejected, there is no air blast and the section passes (47) onto another conveyor (7b).
