The air blown in is sucked from storeys of the building, to generate air superpressure in the staircase well relative to these storeys. The only air blown in is air containing no significant quantities of smoke. Some storeys (11) can be fitted with one or more ventilators (17) to blow air into the stair well (13), while each storey contains a fire alarm (21) and/or emergency switch (20) to start up the ventilators sited in storeys where there is no fire.
