<p>Appts. for recovering useful substances from solid or liquid materials includes a horizontal air tight enclosure with a removable top supporting on its underside radiant heaters which closely confront the upper run of a continuous perforate conveyor belt used to transport the material to be processed through the enclosure. In use, an inert static atmosphere is maintained in the space above the belt to prevent combustion of the material which is formed into a layer of adjustable uniform thickness on the belt, and gaseous and liquid products released from the material migrate through the belt into collection chambers located below the upper run of the belt. Gases are released from the chambers to atmospheric conditions at a level below the upper run of the belt to assist in maintaining a static atmosphere above the belt. The distance between the heaters and the belt is adjustable to allow variation of the heating effect. Used for processing of coal, oil, shale, tar sands, asphalt, peat, lignite, wood, sewage, crude oil, petroleum fractions and gilsonite. No vaporization or cracking occurs.</p> |
