PURPOSE:To lower cathode sputtering by forming a layer of a phosphor which emits light with longer afterglow than cathode operating pulse frequency and shorter wavelength than the work index of a cathode material in the inside walls of a cathode space. CONSTITUTION:A cathode lead 2, a resistor 3, a nickel-based cathode 4 are formed on an insulating substrate 1 and a Ba film 4' is formed on them and the resistor 3 are connected to the cathode 4 and the Ba film 4' in series. Laminated glass thin plates are used as a spacer 8, an auxiliary anode 5 is installed in one end of an auxiliary discharge space, a display phosphor 9 is applied to the walls in a display discharge space 7 to carry out luminescent display by irradiation of ultraviolet ray generated by electric discharge, and a display anode is installed in the inside surface in a transparent plate 11. A phosphor layer 13 for a cathode which emits light with longer aftergrow than a cathode operation pulse and shorter wavelength than the work index of the cathode material is installed in the walls of the cathode space 6. Electrons are thus easily emitted from the cathodes 4', 4 by external photoelectric effect and discharge can be started by low application voltage and as a result, cathode sputtering is lowered. |
