In a method and a device for treating waste water it is known to use active carbon. In known devices problems arise with the removal of spent, active carbon. The present invention seeks to provide an apparatus and a method for treating waste water in which the water to be treated is introduced at the top of a column of active carbon and flows down through it while spent active carbon is removed from the top of the column in a slurry while introducing an equivalent amount of fresh or regenerated active carbon in a slurry form at the bottom of the column. The present invention provides a method and apparatus in which waste water may be treated with active carbon which is continually replaced at the same rate it is consumed, with a minimum of delay on the treatment operation.
