PRODUCTION OF SPONGY CERAMIC MATERIAL Spongy ceramic material supporting exhaust gas decontamination catalysts is produced. Loosely aggregated polystyrene spheroids are joined together across their contact surface to a spheroskeleton having hollow spaces which are filled with an aqueous suspension of ceramic material. More particularly, use is made of hollow foamed polystyrene spheroids which are connected together to a sphero-skeleton by plasticizing their surface areas. The hollow spaces inside the spheroskeleton are filled with the aqueous suspension of ceramic material and the skeleton is dried at 20 - 95.degree.C. The dry material is freed from the polystyrene spheroids and the ceramic skeleton is calcined at 1000- 1500.degree.C.
