A ladle coating composition and method of its application in which colloidal graphite suspended in a small amount of mineral spirits, such as kerosine, is emulsified in relatively large amounts of water whereby applications of the composition to the hot ladle surface forms a graphite coating thereon without a fire hazard or the formation of smoke and irritating vapors.
