<p>Treatment of coal to facilitate magnetic removal of impurities (pyrites and/or ash-forming minerals) comprises contacting the coal with a metal cpd. (ot a Fe carbonyl) capable of increasing the magnetic susceptibility of the impurities. The metal cpd. is selected from (a) volatile organic Fe which can be contacted with the impurities in the vapour phase, (b) soluble organic Fe which can be injected into the coal as a soln., (c) solid organic Fe cpds. which can be mixed directly with the coal, (d) FeCl2 or FeCl3, (e) Al alkyls. A wider range of metal cpds. can be used than the Fe carbonyls described in US 3938966.</p> |
