The esters are prepd. under controlled conditions by 'confricating' cellulose (II) and esterification reagents (II) to give a confricated (I) prod. 'Confrication' is high-energy frictional interaction of the reactants which are kept in intimate contact and provides the main force for penetration and distribution of (III) through (II) without degrading the prod.
