The acoustic array for mounting around the body of a patient for diagnosis using an ultrasonic compound scanning technique, has a set of plates (T) interconnected by hinges (D1, D2 etc.). They are connected to angle generators which give the angular alignment of the array. The hinges are parallel, and incorporate the angle generators, which can be sine/cosine potentiometers. The angles are selected to cause the array to closely match the shape of the patient's body. The length of each plate is between 1 and 10 cm, and the array can consist of about 100 plates.
