Predeterminable, graduated workpiece widths can be produced with the apparatus while simultaneously making the best possible use of the material. The apparatus consists of a supporting table (2) with a stop (9) for orientating the workpieces (7a, 7b), a machining station (3), a scanning device (4), an adjusting drive (5) and a positioning control device (6). The machining station (3) is equipped with at least one machining tool (19) which can be fed in transversely to the passage direction of the workpieces (7a, 7b) as a function of the scanning device (4), which can be influenced by the longitudinal edge (72a, 72b) to be machined, the machining tool (19) and the scanning device (4) being adjustable in synchronism by means of the adjusting drive (5). The positioning control device (6), with switching points (45a) which can be set in accordance with the desired workpiece widths (71a, 71b), is arranged downstream of the scanning device (4). The positioning control device (6) is operatively connected to the adjusting drive (5). The positioning control device (6) advantageously consists of a disc (35), which can be driven by the adjusting drive (5) and is provided with trip cams (45), and of an inductive switch (50) which can be actuated by the trip cams (45). The trip cams (45) are set to the desired workpiece widths (71a, 71b). The largest possible workpiece width which can be produced is determined by means of the scanning device (4), and the machining tool (19) is then set by the positioning control device (6) to the next firmly preset workpiece width. <IMAGE>
