Acrylonitrile copolymers contg. carbodiimide gps. are made contg. (a) >=65 wt. % acrylonitrile and opt. other co-polymerisable monomers which do not react with carbodiimide gps., and (b) 0.1-15wt. % of an unsatd. carbodiimide of formula R1-N=C=N-R2 (I) in copolymerised form, (where R1 is a is not >7C alkenyl gp., and R2 is an opt. branched (cyclo)aliphatic gp. which opt. contains heteroatoms). The copolymers can be formed in the usual way into films, fibres and filaments. The carbodiimide gps. in the prods. can be used for various chemical reactions. Thus with acids such as acetic acid, polymers contg. N-acylurea gps. are formed. With alcohols, O-alkylisourea gps. are formed. Reaction with dicarboxylic acids leads to crosslinking.
