The machine has a central pillar (7) which carries a transfer head (11) which is located over the stack (1) of the pallet (2). The pallet is dropped into position onto the base (5). The rows of articles on the pallet are collected one at a time after the transfer head (11) has been located exactly at the correct level in the stack. This is achieved by means of sensing devices which act to position the head at the correct level. The control panel is also mounted on the machine.
