The windscreen wiper action is reinforced by a flexible applicator of cleaning fluid etc. to remove insects and other debris from the screen. The applicator can be fitted alongside the normal blade or can have a separate mounting. The insect clearer can be a servo driven device coupled to the windscreen wiper driven by linkages, to perform cleaning movements relative to the wiper movements.
