The protective device for gas or steam filled pipes has a retainer unit fitted to a firm wall and arranged around the pipe to be protected. The pipe (1) is encompassed by a protective pipe piece (3), there being a intermediary space on all sides between the pipe and protective piece. In this space, the pipe can move freely as the result of thermic stresses. The protective pipe piece is retained by connecting pieces (8) from an upper structure (4) firmly attached to the wall. The protective pipe piece is tensioned by wires (9) with the upper structure, the wires being wound around the protective pipe once or several times and back to the upper structure (4).
