Aq. resin dispersions for use in coating compsns. are based on (a) alkyd resins, (b) aminoplast resins and (c) a reactive surfactant prepd. by addn. of ethylene oxide and/or glycidol to a guanamine (I) (where R is 10-22C (cyclo)alkyl. The amt. of ethylene oxide or glycidol added is such that the surfactant contains 4-30 OH gps. The reactive surfactants give stable aq. coating resin dispersions contg. alkyd and amino resins, which do not contain toxic volatile amines or support solvents as in some prior art systems. After baking the coatings, no hydrophilic gps. remain in the film so that the water resistance and hardness of the coating film is improved.
