PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform and defectless oriented film by mixing the amphipathic high-polymer material expressed by the prescribed formula and >=1 kinds of low-molecular materials at an arbitrary ratio and laminating >=1 layers of mixed monomolecular films developed on a water surface on a substrate formed with an electrode layer, then subjecting the films to a heat treatment to effect a ring closing reaction, thereby forming the oriented film. CONSTITUTION:The amphipathic high-polymer material having the repeating units expressed by the formula I, the formula II and having 2,000 to 300,000 average mol. wt. and at least >=1 kinds of the low-molecular materials are mixed at an arbitrary ratio. The mixed monomolecular films obtd. by developing on the water surface are laminated in >=1 layers on the substrate formed with the electrode layer and are subjected to such a heat treatment as to induce the ring closing reaction, by which the liquid crystal element including the thin films formed in such a manner is obtd.
